Baby Boomer Bill Pinella updates American Idol

From San Diego to Aspen to Galveston … lotsa mileage in one week

SAN DIEGO The tryouts were held on an aircraft carrior (what else?) so technically I guess we weren’t really in San Diego but somewhere on the Pacific Ocean. Might have been more interesting (at least for Steven) had they performed during the Over-The-Line tournament (those of you with San Diego roots will understand that). Unfortunately, I missed this show (even though it was aired on Sunday and Tuesday) since I was still in shock over the 49ers loss to the… Read More »

Pittsburgh auditions yield 38 gold tickets

For starters it just doesn’t seem right that there are Idol auditions in … Pittsburgh. This is a Dirty Dancing kind of town. A Steel Town. Blue-collar. Karaoke until last call. Come on, Idol? But I am willing to give it a chance and besides you don’t exactly have to be from Steeltown to audition here. Someone from say, Allentown, just might show up! Here we go: Heejun Han, 22, Flushing N.Y. – “How Am I Supposed to Live Without… Read More »

Idol ratings down, like way down

What exactly is it- too many options, no taking into account all the folks with a handy-dandy DVR, it’s getting old hat or is there really an X-Factor in play here? Whatever, the first night’s ratings for Idol in that key demographic area of 18-49 years old (I’m outta that one), dropped 27 percent from a year ago. That’s the bad news. The good news – AI is still the highest rated show. Season 10 opening night went down 11… Read More »

THIS is Season 11!

We’ll try to approach the opening of Season 11 with a stream of consciousness look at the show… Two hours. OMG … first of all I just don’t like 120 minutes of just about anything including Idol. But here goes… First, a decade look-back … somewhat self-serving but once again Ryan Seacrest is the story. He is so underrated on this show. All you had to do was watch X Factor one time  to realize how good Seacrest is and… Read More »

Archuleta’s previous comments on going on a mission

David Archuleta announced this week that he is going to go on a hiatus from music to complete a 2-year mission as a Mormon. A little over two years ago, Nov. 28, 2009, Idol Chatter interviewed Archuleta prior to his initial performance in Santa Rosa. Here is what he had to say then about going on a mission for his church: ———————- David Archuleta is Mormon by faith. And at some point Mormons go on a mission to spread that… Read More »

Reviewing Archuleta’s holiday performance in SR

Still smiling. Still laughing. Still posing. That was David Archuleta Tuesday night at theWellsFargoCenterfor the Arts. Prior to his stop inSanta Rosaon his My Kind of Christmas Tour, Archuleta was doing what he does second-best: interacting with people. It was then that he was near the end of his 90-minute meet-and-greet session prior to the 2 ½ hour concert when one of the last fans asked him to sing a few notes of one of his songs. He kind of… Read More »

For Archuleta, finishing second on Idol wasn’t devastating

David Archuleta, who will appear at the Wells Fargo Center for the Performing Arts in Santa Rosa tonight (Dec. 13) at 8 o’clock, finished second on Season 7 of American Idol. Now, nearly five seasons removed from that runnerup position, does Archuleta see any real difference between being an American Idol winner as oppossed to a second-place finish? “Depends on what you were looking for,” he said in a recent phone interview while on a tour stop in Idaho. “If… Read More »
