There is little question that the hardest song David Cook has attempted to perform is the National Anthem.

The last time he did it was on Sept. 11th prior to the Kansas City Chiefs home season-opener against the Buffalo Bills.
The Chiefs, Cook’s favorite NFL team, lost that day 41-7 to the Buffalo Bills.

“I did the Anthem at the Chiefs opener and they got beat pretty bad,” Cook said. “They lose like that and I’m gonna be perceived as bad luck.”

He laughed at that notion, but he didn’t laugh about the degree of difficulty attached to singing the song.

“Without question the Anthem is hard to sing. It jumps all over the place,” he explained. It’s not an easy melody. And beyond that is the pressure of singing it.

“You sing that song well and people say, ‘OK, let’s get on with the game.’ And if you screw it up … people still talk about Christina Aguilera’s version (at last year’s Super Bowl). And she’s an incredible singer. I implore anybody that can sing to get up in front of that many people and do the Anthem and pretend you don’t pee your pants a little bit.”
