Oakland’s Kamaria Ousley, 29, was the only Bay Area contestant to make the cut Thursday night, But the American Idol season 12 journey was whittled down to a Top 40 and neither San Diego State student Marvin Calderon nor Valley Center’s Morgan
Leigh Boberg made the cut on the show which was aired on Thursday night.

The taped show (actually it happened in December), revealed the final cuts from the Hollywood portion of the show. Calderon actually made it to the Top 28, but for added suspense the show’s producers opted to keep eight male contestants hanging around for an extra week before subduing their dream of being the next American Idol.

“There were times where I wanted to quit,” Calderon told The Daily Aztec in an interview earlier this month, “but I knew I wanted to be a part of it. American Idol is the biggest opportunity for a regular person to be seen as a singer because it’s considered to be the golden standard of this type of show.”

Boberg, who is a member of a six-person country band called the Morgan Leigh Band which started playing together just 10 months ago, was eliminated without even being seen on the Thursday night telecast.

“I’m more of an artist now and I know exactly what I want to do,” she told San Diego’s FOX 5 News in an interview earlier this week.

Her day job puts her on the fringe of show business anyway. She is a Disney princess at Disneyland.

American Idol now switches locales and moves on to Las Vegas for 8-10 p.m. shows on Feb. 20-21. Each night 10 semifinalists will perform and the judges will keep five and eliminate five.
